Using the Elements of Design In Your Home

You might be wondering how interior designers make designing a room so easy. And it’s no accident that it appears this way! When an interior designer looks at a space, they have seven design elements that they keep in the back of their mind. Following these seven elements is what makes a room look put together and complete. The seven elements are space, line, form, light, color, texture and pattern. Thanks to an article that was put together by the Interior Design Academy, we can take a closer look of how to get designer quality looks in your own living room.

Space

Space is one of the most important design elements. It determines what you have to work with. Unless you’re planning on adding on to your house, you typically are stuck using the space you already have within your home already. The main ways you can alter that is by removing walls or like I said earlier, adding on.

There’s different types of space too. There’s positive space, which is an area that contains objects in it. And then there’s negative space, that has nothing in it, it’s completely empty. Depending on how you choose to decorate your home, will determine what type of space you have. If you’re going for a more minimalistic look, you will have more negative space. If you like a more eclectic look, you will have more positive space.

Depending on what the room is used for will also help determine what type of space a room is. If it is a heavy foot traffic area, like a hallway, you want there to be more negative space because you need room for people to walk around. Other things that need to be considered are the size of a room. You don’t want to make it feel overcrowded by placing too much furniture in a small room.

Line

Lines are created by the furniture used in a room. They act as a guide for the eye usually. The types of lines in a room are horizontal, vertical and dynamic. Horizontal lines are usually created by things like tables or dressers and can be used to make a room feel wider. Vertical lines are created by things like windows or doorways. They help make a room look taller. Dynamic lines are created by objects like stairs. They bring energy to a room and can overpower a room if there’s too many dynamic lines in one space.

Interior designers will balance out a room as much as they can using the lines in their design. They do so by choosing one dominant line type, and then use others to help balance it out. Finding the right balance between the different types of lines  in a space can make a huge impact on the overall design of a room.

Form

To put it simply, form is the shape of the room itself, and the furniture in the room. Its anything that is 3 dimensional and takes up space in the room. Forms can be described either as geometric or natural forms. Man made objects with hard surfaces and lines are considered geometric forms and natural forms are organic items, usually made by nature. When working with the form element, keep in mind that unity is key. Having more items of a similar shape is more appealing than a bunch of random things everywhere.

Light

Light is the most important element when designing a room. There are three different types of lighting to consider too. The first is task lighting, or lighting that is used for a purpose. There’s accent lighting, used to emphasize an object. Then, there’s mood lighting, or lighting that adds ambience to a room.

It’s important to keep in mind that besides the three categories listed above, there’s also a difference between man made lighting and natural lighting. You can get the best use of natural lighting by making sure your windows and doors are in ideal spots and adding things like skylights. Adding things like dimmers to your lights can also help, as lighting affects our moods too. We don’t always need access to the brightest lights available, especially when we are trying to relax.

Color

Color is another important element when it comes to interior design. Have you ever walked into a home and immediately hated it because you couldn’t get past the colors on the wall? That’s how important it is. Getting the right color is important because color makes us feel things. It triggers memories in us and emotions too. It’s also important to keep in mind how the color looks in natural light, but in artificial light too. Lighting can affect the way certain paint colors look. It’s also important to keep in mind what the room’s purpose is and what size it is too. If it’s smaller, try a nice light and bright color to make it feel bigger. Feel free to go a little darker if the space is large enough. But the best part is, if you don’t like the end result you can always change it with a fresh coat of paint.

Texture

This design element is fun. You can mix and match textures to add a nice touch to your rooms. There are two different kinds of textures to keep in mind, visual and actual textures. Visual textures are when something looks like it has a certain texture. Think like marble accents. Actual texture is when something actually feels the way it looks, like a furry rug. These elements tend to give a room feeling. Generally, if a room is feeling like its missing something, texture needs to be added.

Pattern

Pattern is created by using the same design in a repeated way in a room. You can find the same pattern on the curtains, pillows, rugs, wallpaper, wherever it could possibly be put really.

Patterns types are usually animal prints, geometric, motif, organic pictorial or stripes. It’s important to keep the size of the room in mind when trying to use patterns. Big and busy patterns may work in a large sized room, but can be too overpowering in a small room. It’s best to mix no more than 3 patterns in a room. Patterns can bring a room to life, if used correctly.
